I say, with God's guidance: The automated method of slaughtering chickens has a flaw from a Sharia perspective in several ways:
1- In some slaughterhouses, chickens are dipped in cold water with an electric current before slaughtering, which raises concerns that it may cause the chickens to die before being slaughtered, as some experts believe this electric current causes cardiac arrest in 90% of chickens, and God knows best.
2- The rotating knife, although sufficient to cut the veins in most cases, sometimes does not reach the chicken's neck completely, so it does not cut the throat or only cuts a small part of it, leaving the veins uncut.
3- With the rotating knife, it is not possible to invoke God's name on each chicken, and invoking God's name when operating the device or by a person standing by the knife does not meet the Sharia requirements.
4- The hot water through which the chickens pass raises concerns that it may cause the death of chickens whose necks were not cut by the rotating knife or were partially cut. After considering these four reasons for the flaw, it becomes clear that addressing this flaw is not difficult, and this automated slaughter device can be used after making some modifications to its usage, which are as follows:
1- Do not use electric current in cold water, or ensure that this current does not cause cardiac arrest.
2- Do not use the rotating knife, and employ Muslims or People of the Book to take turns slaughtering the chickens that pass in front of them by hand, invoking God's name on each chicken. I have detailed this method, and it is practiced in several large slaughterhouses at the request of Muslim owners, and it does not reduce production quantity.
3- Ensure that the hot water through which the slaughtered chickens pass does not reach boiling point.
By observing these three matters, the chickens slaughtered by this device are considered halal, as informed by our Sheikh Muhammad Taqi Usmani, and God knows best.
